Goal: Understand how to establish a sampling plan for volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which may involve the use of direct-read instruments and/or laboratory-based methods.

Lesson 1: Direct-Read

Objective – Determine when photoionization detectors (PIDs), flame ionization detectors (FIDs), and/or direct-read tubes should be used to measure VOCs.

Lesson 2: Laboratory-Read

Objective – Determine when active sorption, passive diffusion, and/or whole air canisters should be used to collect VOC samples for laboratory analysis. You’ll also be able to describe analysis by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry.

Lesson 3: Sampling Plan and Interpretation

Objective – Establish a sampling plan for VOCs and interpret the results.
