This presentation will provide an overview of assessment issues and sampling strategies in fire damaged buildings. The objective is to provide an understanding of the multiple problems fire/combustion creates for a building structure. There are many complex factors to be considered in assessing fire damage, from the obvious such as the distribution of soot, char, and ash, to deposited volatile organic compounds and toxins such as dioxins and furans, as well as extensive moisture damage and microbial growth from the fire suppression.
